Big Sur 2013

After my sub-internship at MGH on the Bigelow A service, I desperately needed some time to reorient.  Fortunately, we were scheduled for a trip out to California for the wedding of Haomiao and Lydia, who were married in this gorgeous redwood grove at UC Berkeley.

Afterwards we drove down the Big Sur coast, taking our time and spending two nights in a lovely cabin in the hills.  Joanne and I had done this drive many years ago in one aggressive day, with just a nap in Monterey to break up the drive.  I remember the sky being almost painfully blue and the coast spectacular.  This time, the weather wasn't as nice, but that turned out to be an opportunity for some long-exposure shots, all of which combine into a sort of moody impression.

This was also the first trip that we used a chest bag system for stowing the cameras while scrambling up and down rocks and so on.  To avoid the expense of a true chest bag, I bought a pair of $15 Case Logic SLR camera bags (which even come with a rain cover!), and instead of hanging the bag by a shoulder strap, we hooked them up to our backpack loops with carabiners so that they hang about chest height.  You can see the setup when Joanne and I are sitting in the tree.  It strikes a great balance between gear accessibility and protection while trundling around.
