Across the Continent - Grand Teton National Park

Loading...

It's just a 40 minute drive south of Yellowstone to the gorgeous Grand Tetons.  This park is perfect - flat valley with an amazing mountain range, so that it's easy to get around, and there's lots of interesting places to take photos with good foreground interest.

Many beautiful photos have been taken of this range, including perhaps most notably one taken by Ansel Adams of the cathedral group and the Snake River.  The site of that photo is actually well known.  In his day, there was a lot of deforestation, which was unfortunate but did enable the view of the Snake River.  Today, there has been a great deal of reforestation, so the vista from that particular place is obscured by trees.

Our somewhat unusual take on the Grand Teton range was to take it in moonlight. We were lucky to have a full moon on the days we were there, and so we spent a couple pretty cold hours standing around, waiting for gaps in the clouds to occur. In particular, the Tetons are west of the valley, so the rising moon (in the east) illuminates it nicely.  The resulting panorama is pretty cool, although I guess it could be mistaken for a weird daylight shot. Better yet, at dawn, the full moon sets behind the mountains, enabling some nice moon-and-mountain shots.
