Blue Angels - Fleet Week San Francisco

Loading...

Had a day off that happened to fall on Fleet Week SF, and hiked out to the Ghirardelli Square to watch the air show with Joanne, Sueann, and Joey. There were other acts, but of course the Navy's Blue Angels stole the show. Of note, United sent somebody to fly a 747 at low altitude over the Golden Gate and Alcatraz Island; originally scheduled for 2:30 PM, in typical United Airlines fashion, the flight didn't show up until 4:30 PM.

I think the struggle here is to get the aircraft with some kind of context. Because the aircraft are small and need long lenses to bring out, the contextual element must be distant. The best we could do at these focal lengths (200-300 mm) was the Golden Gate Bridge, some 3 miles away. Even at that distance, only the top of the bridge is in the frame. Fortunately a low fog rolled in, masking the bottom of the bridge and giving me the excuse, so to speak, to just show the top of the bridge.
